Friends of the Cathedral

Trinity Cathedral is the hub and heart of our diocesan community of 164 churches with more than 50,000 members in central and southern New Jersey. Our Cathedral is a place of pilgrimage and hospitality, but its congregation cannot sustain this vital center of our common life and mission on its own. Every Episcopalian in our Diocese has a special stake in our Cathedral. Please be a Friend and give generously in support of Trinity Cathedral, for the sake of Jesus Christ and for the benefit of the people of God. And while we especially invite other Episcopalians in our Diocese to join, we welcome anyone who has been touched by our ministries to join us as well, at whatever level of support you are able to give.

Here are excerpts from a recent letter to everyone in our Diocese from our Bishop, The Rt. Rev. George E. Councell:

Dear Friends,

Each of us in the Diocese is a member of two parishes. The first is our own local church where we worship each Sunday and participate in its various ministries. The second is our Cathedral, a symbolic rallying point of our diocesan life and host to dozens of diocesan events and festivals throughout the year.

The Cathedral truly belongs to each of us and each can play a part in ensuring that it is a strong, vibrant presence not only for the city of Trentonbut also throughout the entire diocese. The Cathedral congregation maintains and supports a building complex of over 40,000 square feet. In a typical year, 167 events are hosted in service to the Diocese and the Trenton community, in addition to the events held in support of the Cathedral’s own congregational life. The heating bill alone costs more than $60,000 annually.

While the Cathedral congregation is strong, committed and diverse, and is reaching out to its neighborhood and community in a variety of new ways, it is not able to financially carry the expenses of this vast complex and needs the help of people from our Diocese. Contributions to the Friends of Trinity Cathedral are vitally important to the success of our mission.

Your gift to the Friends of Trinity Cathedral will help ensure that we continue as a vibrant center of worship, education, service and the arts.

We hope that we can count on your support.

The Rt. Rev. George E. Councell
XI Bishop of New Jersey
