Liturgy and Music Commission
The Liturgy & Music Commission assists the Dean in planning the Cathedral services, supports the music ministry, and provides a forum all parishioners can use to provide feedback on these matters.
Special services planned throughout the year include Tenebrae and the other traditional services of Holy Week, an Advent service of lessons and carols, and even a Gospel Mass. The 4th Sunday of each month is designated as Family Sunday; at the 10:00 am service, teenagers deliver the prayers of the people, and the bible readings, which are taken from the ‘Good News Bible’.
Through the year the Commission works directly with Canon Deborah Ford (Cathedral Choir Director and Associate Music Minister) and Dr. Kerry Heimann (Cathedral Organist and Associate Music Minister) to present engaging music including hymns and service music from the 1982 and LEVAS II hymnals, psalms in Anglican style, and anthems that are traditional, contemporary or gospel.
Solo renditions of sacred music are provided, especially through the summer, by choir members and friends. In our congregation we are blessed to have several professional and amateur musicians who volunteer their gifts. Many times Benny Barksdale plays sax. Anita Hill plays cello. Our hearts are lifted by brass players playing jazz, by young violinists, by singers from the American Boy Choir school. Brass and string instrumentalists are featured for the great occasions of Easter and Christmas. Special thanks to Deborah and Kerry who prepare and conduct the choir, arrange for alternate musicians, maintain the instruments, and produce the music repertoire. There is excellent collaboration between all musicians.
The Liturgy and Music Commission maintains and repairs the Petty-Madden organ (in the cathedral) and the Austin organ (in the chapel), engaging the services of Emery Brothers on as-needed basis. Donations made to the C. Timothy Heimann Organ Fund support this important work.
Funding of the general work of the Commission comes from the cathedral at large, from bequests and parishioner donations to the music fund including responses to mailings at Easter and Christmas, and from the Altar Guild Shop.
The Liturgy and Music Commission meets as needed throughout the year; attendance is open to all parishioners, and all are encouraged to communicate their preferences and concerns, during or outside of meetings. We are excited to “lift every voice and sing”, with open minds, with prayer-filled hearts.
