The Bishop George E Councell Golf Outing raises funds for Trinity Cathedral’s ministries and fosters fellowship among member churches of the Diocese of New Jersey. Since its founding, the outing has raised nearly $500,000 and brings together representatives from more than 20 congregations from the far reaches of the Diocese.
Held in the bucolic setting of Mercer Oaks Golf course, attendees compete for a variety of awards and prizes, among them the coveted Bishop’s Cup. Winners gain possession of the stunning silver trophy along with parish bragging rights for a full year. We hope you’ll join us for an exciting day that promises to appeal to golfers of all ages and skill levels. |

The planning committee for the 18th Annual Bishop George E. Councell Memorial Golf Tournament held its first meeting on Monday, March 7th. While financially successful, the 2020 and 2021 outings were impacted by the pandemic, as reflected in the decreased number of golfers and a smaller post-event awards dinner.
Dick Koenig, who served as chair since 2015, has stepped down from that position and La’Tonya Johnson has agreed to chair the committee. La’Tonya, a former youth minister and senior warden at the Cathedral, is the Chief Operations Officer at the Jackie Robinson Foundation, where she has worked for 25 years. Asked about her new role, she said, “I am humbled to have been asked to serve Trinity Cathedral in this way. I am hopeful that my experience managing large-scale events can help us grow the Tournament and raise even more money to support the Cathedral’s vital ministries.”
Among the committee’s early tasks will be developing a marketing plan and assembling an event sponsors prospect list. The committee will also look at ways to engage others within the Cathedral and diocesan community who might be available to support specific aspects of the Tournament – from planning to day-of activities.

The 17th annual Bishop George E. Councell Memorial Golf Outing was held on October 11, 2021 at the Mercer Oaks East Golf Course. The theme, "Getting back in play," was very meaningful to the 75 golfers that participated, remembering how the previous outing was postponed by weather and somewhat curtailed by COVID concerns and the restrictions that greatly affected participation. Congratulations to the tournament winner, St. Martin's Church, Bridgewater (for the second year in a row and the third in the past four years!) Members of the winning team were Clay Kellam, Todd Hendrickson, Lou Renda and Pete Kozubal.
